SALESIAN EDUCATION

JOHN BOSCO

THE SALESIANS

John Bosco was born in
Northern Italy in 1815. In 1841 he was ordained a priest and became known as
Don (Father) Bosco.

He quickly took an interest in the plight of young boys from the slums of Turin.

In 1846, with his band of followers growing every week, he bought a shed in the suburb of Valdocco and soon established his first youth centres, hostels and schools.

Don Bosco founded the Salesian Order of priests and brothers in 1859,
and was declared a Saint on Easter Sunday, 1934.

His work for young people
spread throughout the world and today
there are more than 17,000
Salesians in over 80 countries.
